New year, same us.

Welcome to our fourth installment of Press Pass, our once-a-month behind-the-scenes look at Tangle. With media trust at an all-time low, we’re giving our audience an unprecedented peek behind the curtain at the challenges we’re facing, the decisions we're making, and how we’re building an ethical news brand. 


What we've been up to.

Every January, I’m reminded that I love the change of year and the opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and reset my goals for the year ahead. 

Creating space for introspection is really powerful, fun, and exciting to me — sitting down, considering what happened in the last year, setting some goals for the future, and trying (however futilely) to make plans to live out your ambitions. Building a business can be stressful, and it can be fun, but more than anything it is simply engaging. Challenges force innovation; change demands adaptability; failure teaches; success invigorates. 

The last month at Tangle had a lot of the above. We set a subscription drive that we failed to reach (by a pretty wide margin). We faced the challenge of a massive subset of subscribers deciding whether to re-up their subscriptions at once. The media landscape is changing right under our feet through acquisition and bundling. And we got to celebrate 2025 — a year where our business, by every metric imaginable, was a resounding success. Here is a slide I showed the team in an internal meeting about our core product, the newsletter:
