Associate editor.

Tangle News is an independent media organization that covers news from across the political spectrum, with a focus on U.S. politics. Its main business offering, a daily newsletter, has more than 500,000 readers, including over 70,000 paid subscribers.

As the organization has substantially grown in the media space over the last few years, we are now looking for more support. Tangle is seeking a highly organized, hungry, hard-working, open-minded, jack-of-all-trades political obsessive to assist our Executive Editor Isaac Saul and our editorial department in a wide range of tasks — from organizational processes like scheduling, media bookings, and note-taking to editorial work like copy-editing, drafting sections of the newsletter, and contributing to special editions. The ideal candidate will thrive under deadline work, love the thought of joining a blossoming media start-up, value Tangle’s mission, and embrace the challenge and fun of having a diverse set of work tasks on any given day.

This is a full-time, salaried position. It is a hybrid remote and in-person role, though we are only considering candidates who can regularly make it to the North Jersey and New York City area. The job comes with a generous healthcare package and unlimited PTO. Minimum salary will begin at $60,000. Salary offers will be based on a wide range of factors including relevant skills, training, experience, education, and housing.

Primary responsibilities

  • Assisting with various operational tasks like booking travel, organizing team retreats, and managing Isaac’s inbox and schedule
  • Sending an early-morning briefing to Isaac with a list of tasks, meetings, and reminders
  • Participating in editing, drafting, and fact-checking of our daily newsletter, including offering ideological pushback and stress-testing our editorials
  • Pitching, booking, and crafting interview questions for podcast guests
  • Tackling special projects like submissions to awards, creating presentations and visuals, and overseeing a cohort of college ambassadors
  • Other administrative tasks, which include fielding customer service emails and reader responses, as needed

Primary skills

  • Demonstrated experience of being highly organized and working efficiently on deadline, including in the early morning and occasionally on evenings and weekends
  • Strong communication skills, including clean and concise writing and grammar proficiency
  • Experience doing research of any kind, including gathering information for reporting or special projects
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining confidentiality
  • Ability to hold respectful disagreements and work alongside team members who may not share your political views
  • Comfort working in the Google suite of tools, especially Google documents, sheets, and slides
  • Comfort working in CMS platforms like Ghost, or willingness to learn

Additional skills that would give you an inside track

  • Experience as a multimedia reporter, including a history of work published in digital or print publications
  • Experience as an executive assistant, especially in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment
  • Hard skills such as video editing, audio editing, or graphic design
  • Familiarity with Tangle’s mission, ethos, news coverage, and writers
  • A deep obsession with U.S. political news
  • Fluency in a second language
